1 – Existing Health Issues

Anyone can contract a nail or foot fungal infection. However, there are some factors such as existing health conditions that can increase the risk of infection.

If you suffer from bad blood circulation or diabetes, and are unfortunate enough to contract a foot or nail fungal infection, you must talk to your doctor about a suitable treatment plan.

Cut Down On Or Stop Smoking Altogether

Smoking is a significant factor where infections in older people are concerned. It’s a large contributor to poor blood circulation. Smoking is a known immuno-suppression that can result in the development of toenail fungus to susceptible people.

It is very difficult to get rid of toenail fungus if your current medical issues are not already under control. Make sure you seek the advice of your doctor before taking any OTC products you might find in your local pharmacy.

2 – Prevent Toenail Fungus By Not Walking Barefoot

Locker rooms at your local gym or leisure center are a breeding ground for contagious germs and fungi. Make sure you do not walk barefoot through these areas. If you do, do not be surprised when you contract a nail fungal infection.

Buy a pair of plastic or rubber sandals to keep your feet safely off the floor in a locker room, where its warm, moist atmosphere helps germs breed.

Simple beach footwear is fine such as flip-flops. Remember to always wear them in public places, in changing rooms and where you shower.

As an extra precaution, wash your shoes with soap and water at least once a week, to wash away any residual fungi organisms.

3 – Wash & Moisturise Your Feet On A Daily Basis

Keeping your feet clean is one of the best ways to prevent toenail fungus.

Simple & Easy:

  • Wash your feet thoroughly at least once a day
  • Simply use a natural soap and warm water
  • Dry your feet thoroughly to prevent ‘chapping’
  • Apply a moisturizer to keep your feet soft and supple

If you sweat a lot, or suffer from hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), wash your feet more often. Toenail fungal infections thrive on damp feet, so not only keep your feet fresh and clean.

Keep your shoes fresh too using an anti-fungal spray or try sprinkling baking soda into your shoes to soak up any possible moisture. These are two great ways to prevent toenail fungus growing in your shoes.

4 – Keeping Your Shoes & Socks Dry

Fungus and other germs thrive in warm damp environments. With that in mind, you need to stay dry and so does your footwear.

This might seem a small issue, but it’s not. You need to choose your socks wisely. Not the style of sock, but the material it is made of.

Your feet need to breathe so choose a natural material like cotton and stay away from materials such as nylon and polyester.

The same goes for your footwear. There is no point having breathable socks if your shoes do not allow your feet to breathe. Again, wear shoes that are made are from breathable material.

Nylon is fine in this instance provider the shoe has a ‘mesh-like’ structure/design. Do not wear closed over plastic shoes!
