Is There A Sugar And Eczema Correlation?

The simple answer is yes. However, we need to dig a little deeper because not all sugars will cause an outbreak of Eczema. The sugar and eczema link is a little more complicated than to chastise sugar across the board!

What Is Sugar?

Sugar, in essence, is simply a carbohydrate. There are many different types of sugars that have different effects when it comes to causing an outbreak of eczema. Generally speaking, free sugars are the main culprit.

Free sugars are simple sugars, They are added into the food supply by food manufacturers and sometimes consumers when cooking or baking. Free sugars are also naturally present in honey, syrups and fruit juices.

Sleep, Sugar And Eczema…

There is a sedative effect on the body after we eat a meal high in free sugars. It is commonly known as, ‘food coma’.

It takes about 4hrs for the body to use up a high concentrate of sugar supply. After this period we experience a sugar ‘crash’. This can cause a whole list of symptoms including; headaches, irritability and hunger.

In the crash state, cortisol is produced by the adrenal glands which leads to a quickening of the heart rate and a worsened quality of sleep. If a high sugar content meal is eaten just hours prior to sleep, then there will be consequences for the body as a whole.

Through the night, the body expends enormous amounts of energy in its attempt to balance its blood sugar levels, and even more so after eating a sugar laden meal.

Fructose Caused Inflammation

The UK Government’s Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) recommends the intake of free sugars to be not more than 5% of an individuals daily energy intake. This translates to a sugar intake of approximately 30 grams for the average adult.

Unfortunately, these days, the average adult is consuming in excess of 153 grams of free sugars per day. That equates to 5 times higher than that recommended by health officials.

It might sound cliché but it is a saying that stands the test of time and keeps most of us in good stead, ‘all things in moderation’. If you keep as close to the daily recommended allowance for sugar as you possibly can, then you won’t go far wrong in terms of your health.
